Trail-blazer Rachel Bouchard resoundingly demonstrated that a Maine women's basketballer could stay home and still gain collegiate recognition far beyond the State.
The Hall-Dale High School product's escutcheon is no less bright, even if more than half of her 17 University of Maine records were to be topped by the current All-American, Cindy Blodgett. Furthermore, an agile 6'1" center, Bouchard added a telling intellectual dimension as a multi-honored scholar-athlete.
Among Bouchard's honors at Hall-Dale where she posted 1,910 points and 1,255 rebounds:
Twice All State; and in her senior season, 1986-87, Converse All American; Gatorade Player of the Year in Maine, High School Hoop publication All-New England 2nd Team; Robin Colcord Award as Western Class C tournament outstanding player-sportsman; Maine Basketball Coaches Association All-Academic; ESPN Scholastic Sports American Honor Roll; Hall-Dale jersey retired.
The lengthy Bouchard college slate includes:
Sparked Maine to four conference championships, three conference tournament titles. Seaboard All-Conference; school records for game points, 46, and field goals, 19, vs. VCU.
Three District 1 Kodak All-America selections; twice North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year; two GTE/CoSIDA District 1 Academic All-America selections; Two U of M Scholar-Athlete awards; ranked 10th in the nation in scoring, 20th in rebounding, as junior, setting school records for season in points, 724, scoring average, 25.0, and free throws, 198; National Women's Invitational tournament all-tourney, 1990.
Black Bears career scoring 2,406, as New England's all-time leader; State of Maine Female Athlete of the Year, 1991; single-tame field goal percentage record; .909; NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
