A four-sport star at Lee Academy, Shelby Pickering has made her mark on high school athletics in the Eastern Maine area. A four-year starter for the Lee Academy soccer team, she tallied a state-record 178 goals in that time span. A four-lime First Team Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star, she has also been a Maine All-State soccer player on three occasions and twice was named to the Maine Sunday Telegram All-State Team. Shelby's Panda squads won four Eastern Maine Class D soccer titles during her career, and in 2003 her club captured the State Class D championship. The most valuable player on her soccer team for four consecutive seasons, Shelby was named the Maine Gatorade Player of the Year and an All-American in 2004. For her excellence on the soccer pitch, she had her school jersey #13 retired at the conclusion of her senior season.
Shelby also has starred on the hardwood for the Panda basketball team. She tallied over 1700 points as a four-year starter for Lee Academy and was her team's most valuable player during each one of her four seasons. Shelby was a first team Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star and named to the Bangor Daily News All-Tournament team for Eastern Maine Class D on four occasions each. In 2004 and 2005, she was named as the Owen Osborne Class D Most Valuable Player as she led the Pandas to regional basketball crowns. During this past winter, she captained Lee Academy and led the team to its first-ever state championship in basketball.
Shelby is also a two-time participant in crosscountry and was on the 2004 Eastern Maine Class D and State Class D championship squad. She is also a starter on Lee Academy's softball squad and was a First Team All-Conference pick during her junior season. She has served as captain of her softball team during her senior campaign.
In addition to her athletic prowess, Shelby is active in numerous school clubs. She is president of her school's National Honor Society and served as a delegate to Dirigo Girls State. She has also participated in the French Club, the Lee Academy math team, band, student council, and the civil rights team. A leader in her school, she has twice been an officer for the student council and on two occasions has served as president of her class.
Shelby has a career average of 96.13 in a challenging college preparatory curriculum, which includes four advanced placement courses. She will attend the University of Maine in Orono in the fall with an intended major of sports management. Shelby will play for the Black Bears women's soccer program. She is the daughter of Cindy and Tom Pickering of Lee.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
