Matthew Sherburne

A three-sport performer at Windham High School, Matthew Sherburne participated in football. basketball, and outdoor track and field. The captain of the Windham Eagles varsity basketball team as a senior, Matt is a two-time letter winner and was named to the SMAA Academic AII-Star Team in 2006. In addition, he received the team's Coach's Award. Matt also has excelled in outdoor track and field and qualified for the state meet in 2005 in the shot put. His classroom record also qualified him for the league All-Academic squad in 2006.

Matt has been a stalwart for the Windham football program and has earned four varsity letters in that sport. Named KVAC All-Conference as a tight end during both his sophomore and junior seasons. Matt helped the young Windham football program transition to the SMAA in 2005. A strong player on both sides of the ball, he was a Second Team All-Conference pick as defensive end and honorable mention selection on offense. An SMAA All-Academic player, he was the captain of the Eagles and is Windham's representative to the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic to be played in Biddeford this summer.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Matt is very involved in a variety of activities in his school. He has served on the Windham High School Student Council for three years and has been a member of the National Honor Society during that time as well. He also made his stage debut last year in the school's production of Hello Dolly. He has volunteered extensively in his community and school. He has worked with Windham youth in both football and basketball. For two years. he has assisted youngsters in the Windham Special Olympics program. Matt has also worked with D.A.R.E. and Camp Sunshine.

Matt has a career average of 95.95, and he ranks twenty-fifth in his class of 190 graduates. He has taken a very challenging course load, which includes several college preparatory and advanced placement courses. Matt will attend Bates College in Lewiston in the fall and is considering a major in education. He is the son of Michael and Joyce Sherhurne of Windham.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
