Ryan Knight

A three-sport athlete at Massabesic High School in Waterboro, Ryan Knight has participated in football, basketball, and baseball. A four-year varsity letter winner in basketball, he has received the Coach's Good Character Award and is a Southwestern Maine Activities Association All-Academic performer. A four-year member of the Mustang baseball squad, he started as a catcher and was named to the SMAA All-Rookie Team as a freshman and has earned four varsity letters.

Ryan started as quarterback for the Massabesic football team and emerged as one of the top players in the state during his senior season. He was an SMAA All-Conference honorable mention player at quarterback and was named to the Journal Tribune All-Star team. He was also selected by WGME-TV as a Channel 13/Dunkin Donuts Scholar-Athlete of the Week during the 2006 season. As a result of his leadership and prowess on the field, the Mustangs earned a bid in the Class A playoffs and finished as regional runners-up.

In addition to his participation in athletics, Ryan is highly involved in the life of his school in other ways as well. He is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in the Massabesic High School Leadership Development Academy. He also served as a facilitator for the Massabesic Junior High School Drug Awareness Day. He has been an assistant coach for a kindergarten basketball program at Alfred Elementary School and has refereed youth basketball games in his hometown. Last fall he volunteered his time to serve at a brunch to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A fine student, Ryan has a career average of 92.14 and ranks twentieth out of 265 seniors at Massabesic High School. He has taken a challenging courseload consisting of college placement and accelerated courses. A leader in his school, his teachers and coaches praise him as an outstanding role model. Notes his baseball coach, Ryan "has become a hero to his seven year old son." Ryan will be attending the University of New England in Biddeford this fall, where he hopes to major in physical therapy. He is the son of Jim and Karen Knight of East Waterboro.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
