Anna Makaretz

Anna Makaretz has participated in cross country, Nordic skiing, and outdoor track during a distinguished athletic career at Yarmouth High School. She was a member of state championship skiing teams at Yarmouth in 2007 and 2008 and competed in both the skate and classic championship races. In 2007 she participated on the Maine team that participated in the 2007 Eastern High School Skiing championships.

Anna has excelled as a runner. After qualifying for the state cross country championships for the first time as a junior, she had a remarkable senior season in which she won both the Western Maine Conference and Western Maine Class B regional championships. Maine's Female Gatorade Runner of the Year in 2007, Anna competed in the prestigious Footlocker Cross Country championships. A distance specialist for the Clipper outdoor track program, she was team captain in her junior and senior years. As a junior she won the Western Maine Conference championship in the 3200 meter race and was league runner-up at 1600 meters. She was fourth in the state meet at 1600 meters and claimed the state Class C championship with a time of 11:40.25 in the 3200 meter race.

In addition to her athletic pursuits, Anna is active in both the performing arts and journalism at Yarmouth. She was named to the District II Honors Orchestra as a violinist and played with the All-State orchestra in 2007. She has written for her school's literary magazine and newspaper and was the latter's news editor for three years. In 2006 she participated in the prestigious New England Young Writers' Conference at Middlebury College.

Anna has a career average of 95.47 and ranks in the top ten percent of her class. She will attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in the fall and will major in pre-medicine. She is the daughter of Michael and Solvejg Makaretz of Yarmouth.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purpose of: 1) appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes; and, 2) to formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine.
