About the Maine Sports Hall of Fame

Statement of Purpose

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1972 for the purposes of:
  • Appointing and bestowing recognition awards and scholarships to outstanding Maine high school scholar-athletes.
  • To formally honor and memorialize Maine athletes and sports figures who have brought distinction to the state of Maine.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame maintains an active and continually increasing membership base, periodically publishes a newsletter with information on members, past and upcoming events, and administers the Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Program, the Honors and Selection Committee, and President's Award.

Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Committee

Scholarships and recognition awards are presented annually to male and female scholar-athletes and leaders. Recipients are selected from applications submitted by high schools throughout the state of Maine. Scholar-athletes are selected based on scholastic aptitude, athletic performance, and leadership qualities demonstrated by them during their four years of high school. Since 1974, recognition awards and scholarships have been presented to numerous Maine high school scholar-athletes. The scholarship awards program, which is funded entirely from contributions, continues to receive major attention from Maine high schools, and is considered to be the Maine Sports Hall of Fame's most significant civic contribution.

Honors and Selection Committee

The Honors and Selection Committee selects Maine sports figures to be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame from applications that are submitted for consideration and approval. The requirements necessary to be eligible as an inductee are:
  • Nominee must be a Maine sports figure whose achievements have brought distinction and honor to the state of Maine in any field of sport.
  • Nominee must be a Maine sports figure or one who has made a major contribution to the development and advancement of sports in the state of Maine.
  • Nominee must be a Maine sports figure having five (5) years of retirement from their last competitive event in their sports field of expertise (in extraordinary circumstances this can be waived).

President's Award

The President's Award was inaugurated in 1982 to recognize and honor exceptional Maine athletes who are still actively competing in their sports field or those who have made and/or continue to make substantial contributions to the development and advancement of the mission of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
