MAINE SPORTS HALL OF FAME WILL INDUCT EIGHT ON MAY 20, 2012

WATERVILLE - The Maine Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight new members at its 37th Annual Awards Banquet on May 20 at the Bangor Civic Center.

Inductees are: Walter H. Abbott, Orono; Phillip A. Coulombe, Sidney; Emily Jo Ellis, Bangor; Edward V. Guiski, Kennebunk; Matthew Hancock, Casco; Dennis Libbey, Bangor; Howard S. Vandersea, Brunswick; and Dana E. Wilson, Brewer.

In addition, four scholar-athletes will be honored as recipients of $5,000 scholarships: Jordan Hersom, Turner; Patrick LaChance, Raymond; Seth Sweet, Madison; and Carylanne Wolfington, Hallowell.

Wayne Lawton and Keith Mahaney, Bangor, will receive the President’s Award.

The dinner buffet will begin promptly at noon.

Tickets are $40 for members of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and $45 for non-members. A reserved table for 10 is $400. Tickets may be purchased until May 13. No tickets will be available at the door.

INDUCTEES

WALTER H. ABBOTT - Head coach of football, University of Maine, 1967-1975. Abbott twice served as acting director of athletics. A respected and well-published teacher in the University’s College of Education, Abbott was inducted into UMaine’s Sports Hall of Fame in October, 2004.

PHILLIP A. COULOMBE - All-State halfback at Cony High, Coulombe was a four-year starter at Maine. He averaged 4.23 yards per carry in 1950. He is remembered for gaining 108 yards in 15 attempts as the Black Bears came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Connecticut 16-7.

EMILY JO ELLIS - A four-sport athlete at Mount View High, Ellis is a symbol of the modern era of women’s basketball at the University of Maine. When she graduated in 1985, Ellis held scoring records in five categories. She was inducted into UMaine’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.

EDWARD V. GUISKI - Coach of boys' basketball at Dexter for 31 seasons, Guiski was voted Coach of the Year in 1984, 1985, and 1986. He won 16 varsity letters in four sports at Winslow High. At Gorham State, Guiski was captain and MVP of an unbeaten (22-0) team in 1963-1964.

MATTHEW HANCOCK - In his four-year career at Colby College, 1987-1990, Hancock scored a school record 2,678 points. NCAA Division III Player of the Year as a senior, Hancock was a three-time All-America selection. He holds, or shares, school records in 14 categories.

DENNIS LIBBEY - A member of an undefeated freshman baseball team, Libbey was All-Yankee Conference and co-captain of the 1973 varsity. When he graduated, Libbey held school records for hits in a season and stolen bases in a career. He was voted into the UMaine Hall of Fame, 1997.

HOWARD S. VANDERSEA - A four-year letter-winner in football and baseball at Bates College, Vandersea was co-captain of football at center and linebacker. He was head coach of football at Springfield College (1976-1984) and headed the program at Bowdoin for 14 years.

DANA E.WILSON In his senior season at Husson College (1973-74), Wilson averaged 34.9 points per game including a 61-point performance against Ricker College. He had 2,471 career points, before the three-point shot. His number 10 was retired December 3, 1974.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

JORDAN J. HERSOM, Leavitt Area High School - Winner of the 41st Fitzpatrick Trophy as Maine’s best senior high school football player, Hersom maintains a 96 average. A four-year starter in football and basketball, Hersom is captain of the Hornets’ 2011-2012 basketball team.

PATRICK A. LaCHANCE, St. Dominic Academy - LaChance ranks first in his class with a grade point average of 4.53. His athletic profile includes four seasons of cross country and three in outdoor track. LaChance has been accepted as an early-decision applicant at Brown University.

SETH J. SWEET, Madison Area Memorial High School - Sweet ranks sixth in his class with a 95.38 grade point average. His name is synonymous with the individual Mountain Valley Conference golf championship. He will play golf at Old Dominion University.

CARYLANNE WOLFINGTON, Hall-Dale High School - Wolfington maintains a 95.8 grade point average. She led Hall-Dale to the 2011 state Class C basketball championship with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists. She has been accepted as an early-decision applicant at Colby College.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD

Wayne Lawton and Keith Mahaney will be honored for their distinctive contributions as directors of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. Lawton (22 years) and Mahaney (16 years) retired from the MSHF Board in 2010.
